A happy control freak's Thanksgiving to you too!

I saw this on Awkward Family Photos. It's reportedly a letter/e-mail sent out by a woman hosting Thanksgiving at her home. It's one of the most control-freak letters I've ever read. I wonder if the Amy Misto family actually showed up.

________________________________________________________________________________

From: Marney
As you all know a fabulous Thanksgiving Dinner does not make itself. I need to ask each of you to help by bringing something to complete the meal. I truly appreciate your offers to assist with the meal preparation.
Now, while I do have quite a sense of humor and joke around all the time, I COULD NOT BE MORE SERIOUS when I am providing you with your Thanksgiving instructions and orders. I am very particular, so please perform your task EXACTLY as I have requested and read your portion very carefully. If I ask you to bring your offering in a container that has a lid, bring your offering in a container WITH A LID, NOT ALUMINUM FOIL! If I ask you to bring a serving spoon for your dish, BRING A SERVING SPOON, NOT A SOUP SPOON! And please do not forget anything.

All food that is to be cooked should already be prepared, bring it hot and ready to serve, warm or room temp. These are your ONLY THREE options. Anything meant to be served cold should, of course, already be cold.

HJB—Dinner wine

The Mike Byron Family
1. Turnips in a casserole with a lid and a serving spoon. Please do not fill the casserole all the way up to the top, it gets too messy. I know this may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but most of us hate turnips so don’t feel like you a have to feed an army.
2. Two half gallons of ice cream, one must be VANILLA, I don’t care what the other one is. No store brands please. I did see an ad this morning for Hagan Daz Peppermint Bark Ice Cream, yum!! (no pressure here, though).
3. Toppings for the ice cream.
4. A case of bottled water, NOT gallons, any brand is ok.

The Bob Byron Family
1. Green beans or asparagus (not both) in a casserole with a lid and a serving spoon. If you are making the green beans, please prepare FOUR pounds, if you are making asparagus please prepare FIVE pounds. It is up to you how you wish to prepare them, no soupy sauces, no cheese (you know how Mike is), a light sprinkling of toasted nuts, or pancetta, or some EVOO would be a nice way to jazz them up.
2. A case of beer of your choice (I have Coors Light and Corona) or a bottle of clos du bois chardonnay (you will have to let me know which you will bring prior to 11/22).

The Lisa Byron Chesterford Family
1. Lisa as a married woman you are now required to contribute at the adult level. You can bring an hors d’ouvres. A few helpful hints/suggestions. Keep it very light, and non-filling, NO COCKTAIL SAUCE, no beans of any kind. I think your best bet would be a platter of fresh veggies and dip. Not a huge platter mind you (i.e., not the plastic platter from the supermarket).

The Michelle Bobble Family
1. Stuffing in a casserole with a serving spoon. Please make the stuffing sans meat.
2. 2.5-3 qts. of mashed squash in a casserole with a lid and serving spoon
3. Proscuitto pin wheel – please stick to the recipe, no need to bring a plate.
4. A pie knife

The June Davis Family
1. 15 LBS of mashed potatoes in a casserole with a serving spoon. Please do not use the over-size blue serving dish you used last year. Because you are making such a large batch you can do one of two things: put half the mash in a regulation size casserole with lid and put the other half in a plastic container and we can just replenish with that or use two regulation size casserole dishes with lids. Only one serving spoon is needed.
2. A bottle of clos du bois chardonnay

The Amy Misto Family (why do I even bother she will never read this)
1. A pumpkin pie in a pie dish (please use my silver palate recipe) no knife needed.
2. An apple pie in a pie dish, you can use your own recipe, no knife needed.
Looking forward to the 28th!!
Marney

(kindly submitted by Kara at http://californiakara.blogspot.com)

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Don't she sound like fun?

Happy Thanksgiving!

To all those in the USA or those celebrating around the world - Happy Thanksgiving!

Special thanks to our men and women in the armed forces and those who love and miss them - especially mikeinbama :)

I'll be spending most of the day in the Psych ER but will be coming home later for dinner with Robert.

Be safe!

Couple of thoughts on a Sunday morning

I have noticed that when walking down a long hallway people tend to stick to the right side. I've asked quite a few people why they do it and they, like me, do not know except that it's the way they've always done it. Now I know we also drive on the right side of the road here in the colonies so if walking is an extension of our driving habits then, do people in Great Britain, for instance, walk on the left side of the hall?

Another random question: have you ever had someone on your friends list that you assumed was one gender only to be surprised later to find out they were the opposite?

I think it was taken while they were dating so that would be 1963 or 1964. As always on this day, I miss my mom but the sadness is less this year and I can laugh when thinking of the good times.

Happy Mothers Day to all moms out there and, as I say every year, I don't presume to know how all mothers and kids get along but if you have a good relationship with your mom then give her a call or a hug for all of us who can't! :)

Two Years

Two years ago this morning my mum passed away after her long struggle with lymphoma. She'd lived well past the time she'd been given when the last chemo/radiation treatment failed her. The suffering she endured both personally and watching my dad before he died really tested her established beliefs. Sometimes she'd get so frustrated she'd take off her wig and throw it, but in the last few months she found and deeper peace with her condition and her God. Whether that was all spiritual or just the final stop on the Kubler-Ross Express is known only to her.

She lived a good life in service to not only her family, but also her patients. There were many times when my dad was drinking heavily that she thought about taking us kids and leaving him, but she stuck it out through all the broken promises and was eventually rewarded with my dad's sustained sobriety. She chose to work the night shift on the alcohol/drug detox unit at the VA (can you say "sublimation") caring for the patients when they came in drunk, belligerent and puking. She'd clean them up, put them to bed and in the morning work with the docs to get them transferred to rehab units or send them back out (when they didn't want rehab) with fingers crossed and the reminder of "I'm usually here on the night shift. You can always come back if you really want rehab next time." On more than one occasion we would be out in public and some unknown man would come up to her and say something like, "Hi, Ms. Quinn, remember me? I'm still doing great with AA (or some other program) and just wanted you to know." She'd always congratulate them on their sobriety and reinforce to them that it was THEIR victory. I had a chance to work on her unit in residency. I would come on in the mornings as she would be ending her night shift and I'd walk her to her car.

It doesn't seem like two years, but I, of course, still miss her terribly. Time has made it a little easier, but I spoke with my sister who still feels it more keenly since she essentially lived with her those last few years. So I'll remember only the good today and as my Jewish friends at work told me, "May her memory be for a blessing". I love you, mom, and miss you.

Sad realization

I sometimes run through my friends list to see who might need a "nudge" to reconnect here on LJ. Some people just decide it's time to move on (I still miss discograss and his dimples) but others seem to drop off the radar and no one knows what happened.

One of those people who seemed to just disappear was tommyx . He was one of the first group of people to friend me when I started this thing many years ago. He would often post for awhile and then not post for months at a time. He was a very cool guy who lived with HIV and didn't let it get him down. A number of his friends here have been concerned because he hasn't posted in about two years now. None of us seemed to be able to find out any info on him.

Well, recently I joined one of those genealogy sites where you can enter names into large search engines and get all kinds of information. So on a whim today I decided to enter Tommy's name (thanks, magicwoman ) and the birthday he listed in his profile. Sadly I found a matching record in the Social Security database for his name and birthdate stating that he had passed away on December 3, 2006. I have no way of confirming this independently, but the birthdate, name and place of residence all match as well as the time frame of his last post.

I know there are people on my f-list that knew Tommy. I'm sad to find out this news but glad that I finally know what happened to him. Be at peace, Tommy.

*sigh*

Bar scene in San Antonio

Robert and I may have to make a trip to San Antonio (Texas) in January and wondered if anyone knows of any good bars there. Mainly looking for more laid-back neighborhood type bars or levi/leather bars. Anyone have any recommendations or, conversely, places to avoid?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope all those in the USA have a great holiday today. Ours is going to be pretty quiet. I've already started baking and made some sweet potato pie (very old recipe from my grandma) and some Toll House cookies for Robert. I've got an allergy to turkey so Robert will have turkey and I'm going to have ham. He's going to make his orgasmic mashed potatoes along with steamed broccoli and cheese sauce. Nothing fancy, but good gut-busting Thanksgiving food.

And after dinner I'll dress up as Myles Standish from Plymouth colony and Robert will reprise his role and Captain John Smith from Jamestown settlement and we'll play a rousing game of "Poke the Puritan" (just kidding).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well that was unexpected

You are The Devil

Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession

The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.

Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

I got a lot of great responses to my question about buying a new car and I really appreciate it! Robert and I are going to pour over the possibilities and then take the plunge on a new vehicle once the truck gets paid off next month. Thanks again to you all!

Major moves forward and back

As I said last night, as a student of history, I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of joy both here and abroad. I'm bummed by the losses in CA, FL and AZ for gay marriage. I said this elsewhere, but even if my partner and I never want to marry, I hate that the right to do so has been taken away. To all those who fought so hard to defeat these propositions God bless you for your efforts. I am hoping this is but a bump in the road and that we will yet have this right to marry the ones we love.

"What then must we do? Add your light to the sum of light."
